Sognefjord, the King of the Fjords (as it’s known by Norwegians) is the largest and deepest fjord in Norway, with over 200 kilometers of coastline, and branches off into countless smaller inlets and fjords along the way. It is almost 5 km wide, and the cliffs of the fjord rise up to a height of 1,308 meters, making a stunning sight. 

The attractive town of Bergen is the most well-known and popular way to visit the Fjord. The town offers for tourists boat and fjord cruises and sightseeing tours that can easily be done as a day trip. Be sure to allow a full day for your adventure.

The most popular activities for tourists include kayaking, hiking, and swimming, but visitors also enjoy scuba diving in the many fjords (inlets) and bays found in the area. Visitors will especially enjoy exploring the narrow 17-kilometer branches called Næroyfjord which is only 250 meters wide.

The Viking Ship Museum is an interesting attraction on Bygdøy Island in Oslo is one of the world’s largest museums devoted to the history of the seafaring ancestors. It houses three Viking-era ships that were found as a part of different archaeological finds from the largest ship burial in the world.

The largest of these ship burials is the impressive 70-foot Oseberg ship, which was built around AD 800, the ship may have carried more than 80 people when it was new.

Jotunheimen is the largest Alpine region of the Norwegian high plateau and is home to many waterfalls, rivers, lakes, glaciers, and wildlife, such as large reindeer populations. It covers an area of 3,500 square kilometers and includes Scandinavia’s highest mountains. Its mountains range from two meters to two and a half kilometers high, including Galdhøpiggen. 

While Galdhøpiggen offers spectacular views, it can be climbed in about four hours. The hike to the top is fairly easy but requires good physical fitness and appropriate footwear. There are several other nearby mountains to climb, including Skagastølsbotn and Skagastølsbre glacier.

Geirangerfjord
